More than 600 museums across the US will be offering to free admission to active duty military and their families this summer as part of Operation Appreciation.
The Blue Star Families and the National Endowment for the Arts partnered to create this opportunity for families to enjoy everything from local children's hands on museums to those that feature art, history and science.
“The Blue Star Museums initiative is a tangible expression of appreciation to service members and their families,“ said Barbara Thompson, director of the Pentagon’s office of family policy."Each museum will offer free admission to an active duty military member and up to 5 members of their family. Special exhibits within the museum may not be included in the free admission. Families should check with the museum they plan to attend beforehand to make sure they know if there may be charges for those exhibits.
In Northern Virginia some of the free museums and attractions include:
Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre
Bristow, VA
Carlyle House Historic Park
Alexandria, VAGadsby's Tavern Museum
Alexandria, VAMorven Park
Leesburg, VAWeems-Botts Museum
Dumfries, VAFor a complete list of museums participating in Operation Appreciation throughout the US check out the interactive map.

They deserve much more than that!
Most of the museums in Balboa Park are participating. Many of them had free admission on Memorial Day.
