Ghent in Norfolk Virginia

Ghent in Norfolk Virginia

View of Ghent -Norfolk VA- from the bridge at the Hague looking at the Chrysler Museum

There are certain neighborhoods that people aspire to and Ghent in Norfolk Virginia is one of them.  Ghent is very close to downtown Norfolk VA, and it has an exiting corridor of shops, restaurants, movie theater and lots of things to do.

The land where Ghent sits used to be farmland that prior to cars  was considered far from Downtown
Townhouses in Ghent Norfolk VANorfolk.  The first home appears to have been built in 1890 a 5.700 Sq Ft Mansion which happens to be up for sale at the time of the writing of this blog for a deep discount.  The majority of the homes were built up until the 1920s and in the early years the majority of  largest mansions were built. There has been new construction through every decade in the past 120 years, so you find Ghent in Norfolk Virginia  to be diverse in style of homes, and while you can find the stately mansion you can also find smaller bungalows and single family homes.   Now a days you can find a one bedroom condo as small as 614 sq ft.  There are many apartment buildings and in the boom of the turn of the millennium many of these apartments were converted in to condos.

Ghent was a very distinguished neighborhood up until World ward II when thousands of sailors invaded downtown during the war and then would walk in to the nearby Ghent.  My old neighbor who lived in Ghent during those years remembers the yard signs that said "No dogs or sailors allowed."  After the war the neighborhood went in to decline until the 1970's and 80's when savvy investors started renovating and updating the homes.  Many a homeowner lived in one room while updating the rest.
Every piece of land available in Ghent in Norfolk Virginia has been developed, so the new condominiums and homes that have been recently built were tear downs.    The few Co-ops in the area
House in Ghent Norfolk Virginiawere built in the 1930's and 40's.

Ghent in Norfolk Virginia has the feeling of an old neighborhood were people walk their dogs and still has a city feel. There are many festivasl including the Stockley Garden Festival and during different times of the year the Ghent bussines Associacion  organize happening to attract traffic to their stores. I wrote about  the Stay and Play in Norfolk last year. There is plenty of commerce, parks, churches and schools within walking distance and the restaurants are varied from national chains to wonderful local fare.  If you are interested in knowing more about Ghent or moving to the area please contact me.  757-502-5324 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              757-502-5324      end_of_the_skype_highlighting

A Brief history of the first century of the City of Norfolk. Check out the map I created of the City of Norofolk, Virginia

A Brief history of the first century of the City of Norfolk.  Check out the map I created of the City of Norofolk, Virginia (inspired by Lenn Harley's maps)

Map of Norfolk Virginia - Norfolk VA map

Before Norfolk was Norfolk it was called Skicoak and The Chesipean indians ruled the area.  By the time the English came they had been wiped out by Chief Powatan on the basis of a dream by one of his advisors.  The Chesipean Indians had been a peaceful people.
In 1607 three English ships landed at Cape Henry (today's Fort Story,) and then continued their trip up the river where they finally established the first English settlement in North America called Jamestown.  I love Jamestown so much that I will write a whole blog about it. A must visit with owt of town visitors.

But lets continue with our brief history of Norfolk Virginia

By 1622 - 200 acres of land in Today's city of Norfolk was owned by Lewis Vandermill, who almost immediately sold it to a Nicholas Wise a senior shipwright.  In 1624 Kin James granted what is today's Ocean View to Thomas Willoughby, and that same year Ferry service began  across the Elizabeth river on to Portsmouth.  One of my favorites must do when we have company from out of town is to go on a Ferry ride. It leaves each port every 15 minutes during the summer and every 30 the rest of the year.   The fair is $1.50 for adults and children and  $0.75 for Senior and Persons with Disabilities.  Have lunch at one of the magnificent Norfolk or Portmouth restaurants with "Cafe Europa" being my favorite restaurant in all of Hampton Roads.

In 1640 the Elizabeth River Parish is completed in todays Norfolk Naval station.  In 1680, Norfolk Town was established on the area now surrounded by City Hall Avenue on the north, the Elizabeth River on the south and west and the Norfolk and Western Railroad tracks on the east.  The land had been purchased from the son of Nicholas Wise. The price paid for the land was 10,000 pounds of tobacco.
In 1698 the first church was built in Church St present day St Paul's.

And so it goes the first century of our beloved City of Norfolk.  For a history of the City of Chesapeake visit my previous blog on the matter.
